Event information: new waste management policy February 22, 2023
Recently, The Chamber held a lecture on the new waste management policy, on petition of, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Integrity, Nature and Senior Affairs. The lecture was conducted by Mrs. Juliet Carvalhal, who provided information on the newly implemented waste management policy.
Mrs. Carvalhal emphasized the need for effective waste management policies to prevent environmental degradation and promote sustainable development. The audience was then provided with an overview of the current waste management policy. Mrs. Carvalhal also elaborated on the concept of ‘Trash2Cash’. More information is available on the Trash2Cash website using the following link: https://trashtocasharuba.org/.
Feedback from the attendees mostly pointed out their concerns on the new approach to waste management, including the potential use of landfills, incineration, and recycling, currently causing inefficiency and high costs, which consequently results in higher charges to their customers.
The lecture concluded with a discussion on the role of government and industry in promoting effective waste management policies. The speaker emphasized the need for a collaborative approach between government, private sector, and civil society to develop and implement effective waste management policies and behavior towards waste. Company owners are concerned and urge the Minister to provide answers on their questions, as well as immediate solutions to the current challenges in doing business in this specific sector.
The Chamber will closely monitor the updates and continuity of mentioned challenges, and engage in necessary discussions with the concerned Minister to seek actionable solutions on this matter, and will keep the business sector informed.
