SINGAPORE 'WA'S NEW SPHERE OF INFLUENCE IN ASIA'

Aruba, March 16, 2012 - Singapore is to become WA's new sphere of influence in Asia as the state government opens an office in the city-state.
While existing WA offices in China and Japan are heavily focused on commerce, the new base will be used to help spread WA's alliances more broadly through the continent in numerous industries including food, agriculture supply, science, education, health and tourism.

Premier Colin Barnett, who is today travelling to Singapore, said the new office was part of his plan to re-orientate the state's economy towards Asia. "I hope this is the start of a strong relationship with Singapore," he said. "There are a lot of West Australians living in Singapore, a lot of business is done through Singapore but we want to build a far broader relationship and Singapore, in a sense, will be a close friend with WA and will be our prime sphere of influence in South East Asia." Mr Barnett said Singapore was a key destination as a major regional corporate and financial centre and a trade and transport hub, strategically located, with significant connections to Asia's growth economies.
